Kick Start On Dirt Bike Wont Catch

Just purchased a 1974 ct90 which was running at the time. My kick starter is also slipping and not engaging the motor when i kick it quickly. I think you will need to keep the ignition wiring if you want the motor to run.

All i did was clean and lube the spring and bearing. With the flywheel cover removed and the plug out, try turning the flywheel. Will bump start easy , but wont kick start:

Now kick the engine over or hit the starter button and turn the engine over. You can have kick only and eliminate the starter relay, safety relay (if it's still there). Take a good photo of (11) as it is the gear that pushes the assembly into the engine drive gear.

That is one oldschool kick starter system. Have a great rest of the week. After it was warmed up, the kickstarter worked fine.

The bike starts first kick everytime now and the kick start returns everytime. The pilot jet is the most important jetting circuit when it comes to starting your bike. Problem now is that after the oil change and installing a new battery the bike won't start.

Tip the bike over and let it drain out of the exhaust and plug hole of the cylinder. Most dirt bikes (not all) use a magneto type ignition. When it's upright, it will not engage.

(idler on most bikes) now check that the idler gear and back of the clutch basket gear isn't missing any teeth. All the other parts were in good shape. If it just wont catch let it rest (gives the battery time to recover) then try it with the choke on.

If you're kicking a 2 stroke to death, or running the battery down repeatedly and swapping spark plugs but the dirt bike won't start, or is extremely hard to start and the bike has a reed block, the reeds may be in a less than ideal condition, as the reed petals do get worn on 2 strokes which results in the petals becoming flayed, broken, chipped, split, cracked.

That's where you'll find breakage 9 times out of 10. Other times it catches and starts up just fine. That said, nothing is quite as disappointing as wearing your helmet, getting on your bike, and trying to start it to no avail.

My kick starter was slipping when i tried to start my bike so i took everything apart inside the side cover and everything looked good, and then found out there is an adjustment for the auto clutch by the shifter. I have leaned it to the left and it seems to be slightly better, but will still slip if kicked hard enough to try and fire the motor up. A rich jetting mixture is one of the main causes for a flooded engine.

If the kick starter will not move with the plug out then it's time to remove the flywheel cover. If it does not turn over, either the starter or starter gears are bad, transmission is stuck, or the engine is stuck. You can also take a cotton rag and catch some gas. I checked all fuses, connections, wires, battery, etc. If it turns then the kickstarter gears are jammed or broken.

I am new to this forum and the ct90. Edited march 5, 2019 by bob robles. It acts as if the kickstandis still down and i even played with that too.

Here is a video of my kicking it over, i'm doing it slowly because i don't want to do it fast and cut myself on the peg again when it wont grab. It does seem to work some when slowly kicking through, but this is not enough to fire the engine up.
